Holy Man Claims To Have Lived Without Food, Water For 70 Years

A 83-year-old holy man claims he has spent the last seven decades without food and water.
The long-haired and bearded yogi is under 24-hour observation by a team of 30 specialists during three weeks of tests at a hospital in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad.
Two cameras have been set up in his room, while a mobile camera films him when he goes outside, guaranteeing round-the-clock observation.
His body will be scanned and his brain and heart activity measured with electrodes.
“The observation from this study may throw light on human survival without food and water,” said Dr. G. Ilavazahagan, who is directing the research. “This may help in working out strategies for survival during natural calamities, extreme stressful conditions and extra-terrestrial explorations like future missions to the Moon and Mars by the human race.”
Since the experiment began on April 22, Jani has had no food or water and has not been to the toilet.
“The exercise of taking this yogi under the medical scanner is to understand what energy supports his existence,” Ilavazahagan added. “Jani says he meditates to get energy. Our soldiers will not be able to meditate, but we would still like to find out more about the man and his body.”
Jani, who dresses in red and wears a nose ring, grew up in Charod village in the Mehsana district in Gujarat.
He claims to have been blessed by a goddess when he was 8-years-old, which has enabled him to survive without sustenance.

Nigeria can defeat Cote D’Ivoire (MIKEL)

The Super Eagles midfielder has praised the work of the coach following their qualification for the last eight of the Afcon where they will now meet the ElephantsBy Lolade Adewuyi, In Rustenburg
Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel has said that they have an
opportunity of stamping their authority on the Africa Cup of
Nations when they meet Cote D’Ivoire in Sunday’s quarter final
match.

The Super Eagles defeated Ethiopia 2-0 courtesy of Victor Moses’
penalties late in the encounter on Tuesday night.

“It’s been great for us qualifying [for the tournament] because
last time we didn’t make it. This time we’ve qualified and the
group of players we have, and the new manager we have – he’s come
into the team and made his stance. If you want to play for the
country you have to give a hundred and ten percent, that’s what he
demands from every player,” Mikel said at post-match press
conference.

“We’ve come out here to do exactly what he wants us to do and to
play for Nigeria as well. I think it is fantastic, we’re enjoying
it.

“Now we’re in the quarter finals, we just have to keep going and
do what we do in training and hopefully we will defeat Ivory Coast
and go to the semi finals. It’s going to be difficult but hopefully
we’ll make it.”

The Chelsea midfielder rated the game against the Ethiopians
highly but that they knew what they were up against while preparing
for the encounter.

“I think it was really tough, we knew they were coming into the
game looking to win it as well. We knew they were going to be
organised in the middle so we tried to make sure we didn’t play
through the middle.

“They didn’t give me any space to play as well. Throughout the
game I had one or two people running behind me. It was tough but
sometimes I tried to get my space.

“It was difficult for both teams but this is what you demand [of
yourself] when you come to a stage like this when you have to win
to qualify,” said Mikel.

The Super Eagles will next take on the Elephants in a big West
African duel in Sunday’s quarter final encounter in Rustenburg.

Man Murders His Girlfriend After Catching Her In Bed With Another Man

Police identified the woman as Maybe Last Dube. Police spokesperson said the incident happened on Sunday between 10pm and 11pm. He said Dube died at Gweru Provincial Hospital after her boyfriend, Garikai Mpofu (32), in a fit of rage, banged her head thrice against a stone.

"On the said date, it is alleged that Mpofu visited his girlfriend Dube at her house and failed to locate her. He later spotted her at the back of her bedroom with another lover. The other lover (whose name has not been given) fled the scene upon noticing that he had been spotted," said Police.

He said Mpofu grabbed Dube and banged her head thrice against a stone. He alleged that Mpofu also kicked Dube all over her body. He only stopped when the woman pleaded for mercy.

"The two then proceeded to Mpofu's house where the suspect assaulted Dube with an electric cord all over her body. The suspect later woke up his 62-year-old father asking him to ferry Dube to Shurugwi District Hospital"

He said Dube's condition deteriorated and she was transferred to Gweru Provincial Hospital. Asst Insp Mahoko said the matter was reported to the police who attended the scene and arrested Mpofu.

"On the same day that Mpofu was arrested, a police report was made to the effect that Dube had died. Her body was conveyed to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for a postmortem," he said.

Landlord Rapes Girl, 10, Then Attempts To Cut Off Her Genitals With Knife

A man is in trouble after he attempted to insert a knife into a 10-year-old girl's privates.

The man, (name withheld to protect the victim), is alleged to have attempted to do so after making a 'feast' of the hapless girl. It is reported that the man is the landlord where the girl and her mother stayed.

On the day in question, it is reported that the girl was left in the custody of the man by her mother who had gone to the city centre. Taking advantage of the trust bestowed upon him, the man is said to have thought it wise to quench his sexual zest.

The landlord is alleged to have called the young girl who was playing with friends to the house. The girl is understood to have taken time to respond to the call which forced the man to call her again. The girl reportedly asked the man what he wanted before getting inside the house.

Within seconds of getting inside, the suspect is said to have locked the door and told her that she was going nowhere. The girl screamed but a slap in the face saw her getting quiet. He allegedly fondled the girl's privates, saying that he wanted to 'eat them'. As per his threats, the seemingly ruthless man forced himself on the innocent girl.

After his alleged cruelty, the man reportedly took a knife and tried to insert it into the girl's organ. She, however, screamed which forced him to give up before releasing her. The girl told her school mates who in turn told their teacher leading to a report being made to the police.

The man was caught and remanded before a Zimbabwean court. His actions were deemed abnormal by the magistrate who ordered that he should be taken for a medical check up as stated under the Mental Health Act.

“Underwear King”: Naked man creates stir in viral video (VIEWER DISCRETION)

-->
If clothes make the man, a crotchety naked guy just crowned himself underwear king of Philadelphia.
The baffling streaker climbed onto an empty bike rack on the front of a SEPTA bus and put his boxer shorts on his head. Then he dismounted and ran through the streets as a captivated crowd of spectators gathered around.
“I was just cutting hair, all of a sudden I see this white boy just running around acting crazy,” said barber Lou Jeffery, who used his smartphone to record the middle-aged man’s bizarre exploits at the intersection of Kensington Avenue and Tioga Street.
The frazzled nudist scampered around as if he were a character from the opening moments of “The Terminator,” inexplicably emerging nude in an unfamiliar land.
He started chasing Jefferey when he realized his unusual unclothed escapade was being recorded.

The unidentified man barely appeared to realize he was exposed as he strolled around the neighborhood.
“Of course I put my camera down and started running myself,” Jeffrey said. “I [AM NOT] going to let him chase after me.”
José Mora also shot footage of the episode from his brother’s restaurant and caught the man’s odd pursuit of Jeffery on camera, reported CBS Philly.
“I don’t think he knew what he was doing actually,” said Mora.
At one point the naked man tried to put his boxers on again to no avail. Some witnesses said that police eventually arrested the man.
The video was originally posted to Facebook and has since been removed, but it is still drawing viewers on YouTube, according to NBC 10.

Eagles Still in Full Flight(WESTERHOF)

Westerhof gives Keshi’s team full marks, Dutchman optimistic team will improve

Former Nigeria Manager, Clemense Westerhof believes the Super Eagles will overcome their heartbreaking 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso on Monday and beat defending champions this Friday to remain on course for the quarter-finals of 2013 AFCON.

With the Chipolopolo of Zambia slated to battle the Super Eagles in their second match of Group C on Friday, Westerhof reckons the Nigerian side will be in for a real tough duel, but will come out victors.

“Zambia is a complete team. The match will be difficult, very difficult,” Westerhof predicts.

The Dutch man who managed the Super Eagles for five years between 1989 through 1994 expresses his confidence that Keshi has the magic wand to edge Zambia.

“Yes, Zambia is a complete team and defending champions. But I’m sure Keshi will fix the team (Super Eagles) better, and will win the crucial game,” he stresses.

Westerhof  rates Monday's match between Super Eagles and their Stallions of Burkina Faso counterparts as the best in terms of quality so far at the Africa Cup of Nations holding in South Africa.

Westerhof who guided the Super Eagles to win the 1994 edition of the tournament in Tunisia tells Complete Sports from his home country that the two West African teams posted a commendable performance in their opening match of the 2013 AFCON in Nelspruit, South Africa.

“I watched the game (between Nigeria and Burkina Faso). It was an excellent performance by the two teams.  I must confess that it was the best game I have seen so far in the competition,” Westerhof states.

The man reputed as Dutch-Gerian and who transformed Nigerian football into its glorious height in the 90s, winning the Nations Cup in Tunisia in 1994, leading the Eagles to their first ever FIFA World Cup finals in USA same year however expressed unhappiness over the Super Eagles inability to wrap up the game after taking a first half lead.

“The Super Eagles were on top of the game right from the start. They could have wrapped up the game. I think they let it slip when that (Efe Ambrose) defender was sent off and the Eagles could not manage his absence.

“Yes, it’s difficult under the situation, but I thought (Stephen) Keshi could have brought in that defender who plays with ADO DEN HAAG here in Holland (Kenneth Omeruo).

“He (Omeruo) could have been deployed to the left side of the defence while Ikechukwu Uche takes charge of the attack from the left.

“Again, that player in jersey number 7 (Ahmed Musa) should have kept the ball at the flag because the game was almost over. Once the attack was lost, one long ball by the Burkina Faso defenders and it was 1-1.”

The super Eagles one all draw with Burkina Faso on Monday left the AFCON group C wide open and square after Zambia drew 1-1 in the first Group C game.

With the defending champions slated to battle the Super Eagles in the group’s second game on Friday, Westerhof said the Nigerian side will be in for a real tough duel.

“Zambia is a complete team. The match will be difficult, very difficult”.

Westerhof who managed the Super Eagles for five years between 1989 through 1994 voiced his confidence that Keshi has the magic wand to edge Zambia.

“Yes, Zambia is a complete team and defending champions. But I’m sure Keshi will fix the team (Eagles) better and will win the game”, he stressed.

Super Eagles Trounce Portuguese 2nd Division Side, Farense 5-0, Depart For AFCON 2013

The Super Eagles ended their training camp in Faro, Portugal in style on Tuesday defeating Portuguese second division side, Farense 5-0, in a game described by the Nigerian  Coach Stephen Keshi as dress rehearsal for the team’s opening game against Burkina Faso on January 21.
The match, which was again played at the Browns Sports and Leisure Club in Faro, where the Nigerian side stayed throughout its sojourn in Portugal, was barely five minutes when right back, Efe Ambrose surging run into the danger area of the Portuguese was met with a vicious hacking. Centre referee Luis Costa wasted no time in pointing to the spot.
Chelsea star, John Mikel Obi, stepped in to coolly slot home the opener. But Farense made things difficult for the Eagles as Senegalese born striker, Sone Diop, Falardo and dangerman Fabio Texeira attacked sporadically in search of an equalizer that never happened. The Eagles on the other hand had plenty of chances to have buried the game in the first but Nosa Igiebor hit the cross bar thrice, Mikel followed suit with a fiery shot that also hit the bar and Emmanuel Emenike also missed a sitter.
In the second half Mr. Keshi made sweeping changes. Kenneth Omeruo was brought in to replace Joseph Yobo, Juwon Oshaniwa for Elderson Echejile, Ogenyi Onazi for Mikel Obi, Sunday Mba for Igiebor, Obiorah Nwankwo for Fegor Ogude, Ikechukwu Uche for Brown Ideye, Gabriel Reuben for Efe Ambrose mid-way into the half, same as Vincent Enyeama whoi was replaced by Chigozie Agbim.
There was no immediate impact with the changes until in the 75th minute when an Emenike’s furious onslaught down the left wing of the pitch was clinically finished off by Ikechukwu Uche for one of his three goals of the evening. Goalkeeper Agbim must be credited for his quick counter-attack throw to Emenike.
Uche was to score another in the 80th minute after nice footwork by Ejike Uzoenyi left him face to face with goalie Sergio Serrar. He blasted into the roof of the net. He completed his hat trick of the evening after a fine interchange of passes between him, Onazi and Ejike.
Just as the referee was about blowing the final whistle Ejike set up Emenike for the final goal on the dot of 90minutes for a comprehensive demolition of the Farense side. The referee did not even allow for a restart after the fifth goal.
Farense Coach Antero Afonso said at the end of the encounter that his side has learnt useful lessons from the Nigerian national team and predicted that the Super Eagles will do well at the championship going by the quality of players he saw in the friendly. “You have what it takes to win the championship, but you must take each game as it comes and adopt different styles for different opposition. You have very quick players so don’t allow yourself to be under pressure at any time in the tournament. I may not know the teams that will be at the tournament but the team I saw today should be among the favorites to win the African Cup”, he said.
The Nigerian side will depart Faro by 12:30 Portuguese time for Lisbon from where the team will connect a flight to Paris, France and from there to Johannesburg, South Africa. The team is expected in Nelspruit, venue of two of its first two group games on Thursday morning. source: SAHARA REPORTERS

SUNNY OKOSUN'S SON RELEASED FROM JAIL OVER ALLEGED INVOLVEMENT IN NKIRU SYLVANUS' KIDNAP

One of the sons of late music icon Sunny Okosun has been released from jail after being arrested over his alleged involvement in the kidnap of Nkiru Sylvanus and Kenneth Okolie.

Jerry Okosun, who also works for the Imo State government as Director General of Student Affairs, was released January 5th after spending 11 days in police cell in Owerri with other suspected kidnappers.

Jerry was arrested on Christmas Day because for some weird reason, the kidnappers contacted him to negotiate the release of Nkiru Sylvanus. Jerry acted as a middle man for Nkiru's family, the Imo State government and the kidnappers. He was the one that negotiated the N8 million ransom that was eventually paid to secure Nkiru Sylvanus and Kenneth Okolie's release.

After their release, the Imo State Government Chief of Staff ordered Jerry's arrest because they claimed to have found some incriminating text messages on his phone connecting him to the crime...and also because Jerry had been insisting on the government paying N15million as ransom. Jerry says he's innocent.

We Won't Allow Same Sex in Nigeria - David Mark

President of Nigerian Senate, David Mark, has insisted that the Bill prohibiting same sex marriage is irrevocable.

Speaking over the weekend, Mark said the Bill would be passed into law irrespective of pressures from some sections of the international community and human rights activists demanding the legalization of same sex marriage in the country. It is now a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment of not less than 14 years.

In his words: “We will not compromise on this. I want to invite you all to join the crusade of decency in our society.

“There are many good values we can copy from other societies but certainly not this one (same sex marriage).

“We have to prove to the rest of the world, who are advocates of this unnatural way that we Nigerians promote and respect sanity, morality and humanity.

“Every individual is a product of the union of a man and woman.”

“We had chemistry” – Olu Maintain talks about collabo with US rapper, 50 Cents

Award-winning singer, Olu Maintain’s R&B single, Nawti, released last year enjoyed impressive reviews from pundits at home and abroad and won a couple of awards too. His new single, Hypnotize Me featuring American rapper, 50 Cent and Velvet Voiced songbird, Olivia was released yesterday and he hopes to make a big impact in the industry with this musical marriage.
He speaks to Lanre Odukoya on how he has fared in the recent past, new plans and sundry issues
WINNING NMVA AWARD…
It just makes me feel that hard work has indeed paid off, having been quiet for about three years and nominations popping out everywhere to the extent that Nawti won the Best Video of NEA Awards in New York. Nawti was also nominated as the Best R&B Song at the Hip Hop World Awards and I learnt that the only reason it wasn’t nominated as the Best Video at the Hip Hop World Awards was that no video directed by a foreigner is ever nominated. I don’t know why. They should have asked because the director of Nawti video is Kehinde Nayomi Smith and she’s a Nigerian. She was in Nigeria recently for the first time when I won the NMVA Award. But going forward, 2012 has been a very eventful year because my target was to release the album for 2012. With success of Nawti and the dynamism which the music industry was taking, I slowed down on the songs I had recorded initially because I have not been satisfied that I have put in my best into the ‘CHOOSEN ONE’ album. So, I went back to the studio and stared recording again. But now, I can confidently say that the album is coming out in the first quarter of this year and the second track on the album titled ‘Hypnotize Me’ features two international artistes.
ABOUT THE TITLE OF THE ALBUM…
The reason it’s ‘CHOOSEN ONE’ with double ‘o’ is that it’s a ten track album and each of the letters that come together to form the acronym represents each track on the album. There’s a remix of Nawti in the works and I found a new PR team in America called KNX based in Los Angeles and they’re trying to stock my songs and see the possibility of it pre-listed on mainstream radio and the response has been positive. They’re the ones making collaborations with the international acts that I’ve been working with. For me, doing collaboration with any international artiste should not just be by the star power of the artiste; it should be by merit that this artiste can genuinely do justice to the song in question. So, if I was asked who I would love to do collaboration with; a female singer that is equally as pretty and has a beautiful voice, my choice would be Olivia because I’ve always been her fan. So, when we met and I played her the song, she liked it and said she was willing to do it. Then we met in New York at the Platinum Studio owned by Jerry Wonder, one of the most sought after producers in the world. Coincidentally, Olivia is Jerry Wonder’s new artiste as well. 50 Cent has his lines on this track too. And there was this chemistry upon our meeting and we did the song with a beautiful experience and the video too is on the way. Everything is pretty much falling into place and I’m more than happy that I’ve waited this long. In terms of quality, you should never compromise because you have the obligation to always beat your best. So far, my name has evolved from Mr. Yahooze to Mr. Nawti. So, I look at Nawti as the best effort that I’ve put out there and Hypnotize Me has to come to beat what Nawti has done.
ASSESSMENT OF THE INDUSTRY IN 2012…
In all fairness, the industry has evolved bigger and more eventful in 2012. The Nigerian music industry is breaking more frontiers, Afro Beat is now a genre that’s now officially accepted in the UK and the larger parts of Europe and we have international record labels signing Nigerian artistes. We have more collaboration with international artistes as well. 2012 was big and 2013 is going to be bigger. This is encouraging from what the industry used to be some ten years ago. This is just a motivation to keep striving harder yearning for music that has substance. Nigerian music industry has gained a lot although; in its growth, it still lacks some level of development in terms of structure. Recently, I learnt that COSON has been able to get some level of publishing for some Nigerian artistes who have had songs over time. I’ve not got anything from COSON but that is a welcome development from COSON because Nigeria is the only developing country in the world where artistes don’t get publishing for airplay. Go to the UK and the US, one of the major income generating avenues for artistes is shows/concerts but everywhere else in the world publishing plays a larger part in financial rewards that an artiste gets. So for COSON to have intervened to forcefully demand for what is the right of Nigerian artistes, I think it’s a positive development. It’s like a marriage. A typical young man is not ready for marriage but when you find yourself in a situation where it’s inevitable to be in that circumstance, you deal with it. You manage it and you excel in it. So, if the Nigerian media hides behind the excuse that it’s not ready yet, nothing will move forward. Saying you’re not developed enough to impact in policies that the Western world has been doing for decades, you’re basically running from responsibilities. It’s like a loser’s statement; that it’s not going to be easy is not an excuse for it not to start. COSON has started. If everyone has that mentality that we want to follow the structure that we look up to in the west, then it can in no way be a step in the wrong direction.
2013 OF MY DREAM…
2012 for me was a production phase. It was a phase where Olu Maintain came out of a three year hiatus and when he came out, he made a statement. So, the Olu Maintain brand is now known as one that doesn’t make a statement every time, but when it does, he gets it right. Coming up from a split in a group called Maintain, it made a global statement with Yahooze. And after three years hiatus, he made a statement again with Nawti, both the video and audio and won awards. So, in 2013, you can only expect that the production phase is over and it’s now an exhibition phase. Tours, endorsements, concerts are in the offing for the brand Olu Maintain in 2013.
COLLABORATION WITH NIGERIANS…
There’s a track in my album titled ‘Naija A-list’ and it’s a beat produced by a young producer, Yung D. He has produced quite a number of successful songs in 2012 and one of them is Timaya’s ‘Bum Bum’. This is the part I want to have collaboration with five best Nigerian rappers, so I called it ‘Naija A-list’. I have my choices but I’m not going to subject the feature on the song to my decision making alone. I want to let my fans decide who the best five are. It will be an online campaign and people are going to vote for their five best Naija rappers which will be like a survey among industry heads and fans out there.
MY PRODUCTION TEAM…
Hypnotize Me featuring Olivia was produced by the same guy who produced Nawti – Tayo Adeyemi. The Dancia, an upbeat track was produced by a young man called DJ Firm and I also worked with Yung D to produce about two songs in the album.

Don Jazzy Asked His Thugs To Beat Me Up- Princewill Ojukwu ( PHOTOS)

According to a report by Stella Dimokokorkus, Don Jazzy is being accused by a Lagos socialite Princewill Ojukwu of battery, oppression and dehumanization. Princewill alleges that he had a row with Don Jazzy at his newly opened club POP, which led to the latter ordering his thugs to beat "the life out of him."
Please note that the picture above was taken on January 7, 2013. Ojukwu still walks around in pains, cannot wear shoes and has constant migraine.

Don Jazzy sent an sms some days back apologising and asking for an account number to send money for the hospital bill, but Mr Ojukwu says;

'' Its not about the money, this could happen to anyone,it is abuse of power and needs to be checked before someone is killed all in the name of the other being a celebrity.Don Jazzy stood there pinging on his blackberry as his thugs beat me up,that is the last thing i remember before i fainted.it....''

Dangers of Lesbianism (SHOCKING)

Numerous factors have been shown to be associated with increased risk for various health problems. Today we present general information about some of the factors that put women at higher risk of cancer. As for lesbian health research in general, information is limited on the prevalence of particular health risk factors among lesbians. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) provides one useful source of data for looking at differences between lesbian and heterosexual women in the study in terms of certain health-related risk variables. see them below:

1. Religious Implication or Wrath of God

Lev. 18:22, “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”1
Lev. 20:13, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them”

Unlike other sins, homosexuality has a heavy judgment administered by God Himself upon those who commit it – and support it. This judgment is simple in that those who practice it are given over to their passions – which means that their hearts are allowed to be hardened by their sins.

“For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error,” (Rom. 1:26-27).

As a result, they can no longer see the error of what they are doing.  They will not seek forgiveness.  They will die in their sins.  They will face God’s holy condemnation.  But, that isn’t all.  In addition to the judgment of being given over to their sin, those involved in it also promote it and condemn others who don’t approve of their behavior.

“…and, although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them,” (Rom. 1:32).

So, in their hearty approval of homosexuality they encourage others to be trapped in their sinfulness.  They will not trust in Christ’s redemptive work on the cross.  Without Jesus, they will have no forgiveness.  Without forgiveness, they will have no salvation. Without salvation, there is only damnation in eternal hell.  But, we don’t want this for anyone.

2. High Rate of STDs and HIV

They suffer a high rate of STDs due to the unprotected sex that always occur in a girl to girl sexaul intercourse…they engage in a lot of fondling, intense fingering, mouth-to-vagina sex intercourse and mouth-to-anus sexual intercourse [in which they suck up vaginal and anal fluids of their partner whom they are not even sure of their sex life…because the partner might as well be bisuexual meaning…she sleeps with both men and women…and will definitely have unprotected sex with 4 out of 12 men because of the reluctancy in protected sex awareness that has gone numb from the already existing unprotected sex with her female counterparts. and lesbians never keep one partner…they get down one sensing that you are one of them and will suck up all their vaginal and anal fluids asap…while fingering with either dirty hands or unsterilized sex toys that must have been used by or one their numerous partners or encounters. thereby making the circulation of STDs and HIV amongst them to be on the high side

3. Overweight.

Body mass index (BMI), an indication of overweight, differed significantly between lifetime lesbians and heterosexual women in the WHI, with a greater proportion of lifetime lesbians having a BMI of more than 27 (52.3% of lifetime lesbians compared to 45.8% of heterosexual women).

4. History of Pregnancy.

Women who reported having a lesbian sexual identity were least likely to have children (30%), and those reporting a heterosexual identity were most likely to have children (73%). Slightly more than half (58%) of those reporting any lesbian same-sex orientation (identity, behavior, or desire) indicated that they had biological children. Thus, although lesbians are less likely to report having biological children than are heterosexual women, there are still substantial numbers of lesbians who are parents, particularly if these figures include adoptive or other nonbiological parents. In the WHI sample, lesbians were much less likely to have ever been pregnant than were heterosexual women. These differences were particularly pronounced for lifetime lesbians of whom 34.1% had previously been pregnant, compared to 61.2% of the mature lesbians and 89.9% of the heterosexual women.

5. The Health Impacts of Stress

Lesbians, similar to other stigmatized individuals, likely experience stress related to the difficulties of living in a homophobic society. Stress may result from the burden of keeping one’s lesbian identity secret from family or coworkers, being excluded by physicians from making health care decisions for a gravely ill lesbian partner or, among many other factors, being the target of violence or other hate crimes. Hostility and isolation are very potent forms of stress that contribute to allostatic load by leading to elevated levels of the stress hormones (McEwen, 1998; Powch and Houston, 1996).

Although the precise health effects of stress on lesbians have not yet been examined systematically, some hypotheses can be made about their possible health risk based on information about both the stress effects of discrimination on other groups and the stress effects of socioeconomic status.9 It can be hypothesized that lesbians who experience such forms of psychosocial stress sustain negative effects similar to those of other groups that experience discrimination.

It can also be hypothesized that stress effects may be greatest for lesbians who are subject to multiple forms of discrimination.
